The general checks of brake system

The dust formed as a result of deterioration of overlays and accumulating on components of the brake mechanism, can contain hazardous to health asbestos. Do not blow this dust by means of compressed air and do not inhale it! Do not use solvents on the basis of gasoline for dust removal.

Except checks through the established intervals of time a condition of brake mechanisms it is necessary to spend each time at removal of wheels or at occurrence of signs of malfunction in system.

Signs of malfunctions in brake system

Disk brake mechanisms have the built in indicators of deterioration of the frictional overlays, signalling that deterioration of overlays has reached critical size. Thus overlays should be changed immediately, differently brake disks will be damaged also by it expensive repair is required.

Any of listed below signs can specify in potential defect of brake system:

  • At squeezing of a pedal of a brake the car "withdraws" in one party;
  • Brake mechanisms at braking publish scraping or squealing sounds;
  • The brake pedal has an excessive course;
  • The brake pedal pulses (it normally only at system ABS work);
  • Leaks of a brake liquid (usually appreciable tyres on an inside or wheels) are observed.

In case of detection at least one of these signs immediately examine brake system.

Brake lines and hoses

In brake system basically steel brake tubes, except for the flexible reinforced hoses at wheels are used. Regular survey of all these lines is very important.


  1. Park the car on an equal platform.

  3. Check up all brake lines and hoses on presence of cracks and attritions in their external covering, leaks, swellings and deformations. Check of a thickness brake колодок and disks

  3. Visually check up brake disks with internal and an outer side on presence of furrows, a rust, cracks, if necessary replace disks.
  1. Measure a thickness of brake disks in several places by means of a micrometer or a special calliper. It is possible to measure also a thickness of a brake disk by a usual calliper, having enclosed with its each party a lining of known size (for example, two coins), and then having subtracted from the measured value a thickness of a lining.
  1. Compare minimum of the received results to requirements of Specifications to the Head Brake system. If the deterioration border is reached, replace necessarily both brake disks of wheels on one axis. Also it is necessary to replace a brake disk and at the big cracks or furrows with depth more than 0.5 mm.
  2. Establish wheels and lower the car on the earth.

Check of a lay brake


  1. Park the car on an equal surface and release a lay brake.
  2. The car should move manually, action of brakes should not be felt.
  3. Cock the lever of a lay brake on 1 click (the European models) or press a pedal of a lay brake (the American models), the car should remain on a place at attempt to shift it manually.
  4. Completely cock the lever of a lay brake (the European models) – it should not be cocked more than on 5 clicks. Otherwise adjust a lay brake (the Brake system see the Head).
